Put gain on a per-head basis
Compare periods of different lengths using gain per head per day.
Check your understanding
Check the denominator
For an unchanged group, divide its total gain first by the head count, then by the actual days between weighings. Include the unit each time: kilograms per head per day.
Try it yourself
Compare the two periods below. Explain why a larger total gain need not mean that each animal grew faster.
From the farm
Worked example
Period A: 10 head gain 240 kg in 20 days. That is 240 ÷ 10 ÷ 20 = 1.20 kg/head/day. Period B: the same 10 head gain 300 kg in 30 days, or 1.00 kg/head/day. These are observations for this group, not feeding targets.
