Separate an observation about one animal from a guess about its cause.

Record the time and limits of observation
Note the date, time, pen, animal ID and visible action. A five-minute observation describes those five minutes. In an actual situation of concern, contact the veterinarian through the farm’s normal procedure without delaying the call to complete a log.
Try it yourself
Replace ‘has not eaten since yesterday’ with what you actually observed. Write a separate question about the time before your observation.

Worked example
In this exercise the observer is at pen C from 07:10 to 07:15. Animal 18 stands by the gate throughout and does not approach the bunk. The observer does not know what happened before 07:10.
